Northeast Texas Linux Users Group to hold first meeting. Local Linux users are meeting in the Meredith room at the Mineola Memorial Library on May 7th to form the Northeast Texas Linux Users Group. The meeting will start with a presentation on the Kubuntu desktop environment and brief run-through of software alternatives for programs used on the Windows and Apple operating systems. (Kubuntu is a popular Linux distribution very similar in layout to Windows 7) Following the presentation, the first order of official business for the group will be to form steering committee. Meetings are currently scheduled for the first Saturday of the Month from 7 to 10 pm at the Mineola Memorial Library (301 N Pacific St, Mineola, TX 75773). Find more information at www.netlug.org. What is Linux? Linux is a powerful, high quality, versatile operating system very similar to Windows and Apple's OS X, with the added benefit of being free to download and use. Linux is used on everything from smart phones and watches to the worlds largest Super Computers, from every day items in your house such as your cable modem or router to the computers behind the Large Hadron Collider. Linux runs the New York Stock Exchange and is the operating system behind your favorite Internet companies such as Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, Netflix and Amazon, just to name a few. Linux is everywhere and you can use it to run your computer too. Best yet, you can stop worrying about viruses and just use your computer like it was meant to be used.
